It’s a sad fact that we have an excellent vehicle in the Skoda Superb; car reviewers were enthusiastic, but high volume sales have not materialised. Sometimes, there is simply too much competition in a given car segment, and every manufacturer suffers from a dearth of choices. The Australian market is also dominated by a few well known brand names, and it can be hard for a newer manufacturer to make their mark. However, outside these brands, there are a few cars including the Superb that are gaining in sales. Let’s take a look at the movers and shakers on the VFACTS sales list from January to March in 2016 compared to a year earlier.
This boxy little mover racked up 73 sales in the specified period. These are extremely small sales figures, but they actually represent a whopping growth in sales of 387%. The Kia has always struggled to sell here, but a recent price cut at the end of last year certainly helped. Whether this sales bump can be maintained in the long term has yet to be established, but future sales figures could provide interesting reading.
At the other end of the scale, we have the Lexus LX with 100 sales, an increase of 122% over the same period last year. This massive V8 petrol model is based on the Toyota Landcruiser and is available at $156,000 driveaway. Perhaps the Australian love affair with SUVs is now entering a new monster truck phase? Only time will tell.
Our sleeper model has generated 207 sales in the specified period which represents an increase of 95%. We may be biased about our Czech wagon and liftback, but it should be even more popular than it is. The release of our new Skoda Superb model last year has certainly helped to drive sales. In its segment, it’s hard to find a car that offers so much pace and space at this price point.
Another little sleeper car that just won’t quit, sales for the period in question came in at 235, an increase of 64% over last year. This crossover seems to be picking up in popularity as an affordable way into the SUV boom we’re experiencing. A significant price cut last year certainly boosted sales, and perhaps this could continue into the rest of this year.
