The All-New Skoda Octavia: From Its Chief Designer’s Viewpoint

It’s been less than a month since the unveiling of the fourth generation of the Skoda Octavia. However, initial car reviews are quite optimistic on how this family car will do once it hits the global market next year.

Unfortunately, the release of the Skoda Octavia in the Australian market has been delayed until the first quarter of 2021. On the good side of things though, Skoda has improved a lot of factors in the Skoda Octavia from its exterior down to the amenities that were once only present on its top-of-the-line variants.

With the upcoming release of the Skoda Octavia, Perth car lovers are in for a treat.

Oliver Stefani, the head designer of the Skoda Octavia, explains how he and his team have revolutionised the iconic family car. In this post, we will discuss how the Czech car manufacturer has designed the Octavia to be a car that offers good value without cutting-down its main value propositions.]

The All-new ŠKODA OCTAVIA Has Arrived!

Stefani and his team in Skoda have addressed many of the issues that once plagued the previous generation. Central to these improvements is balancing the car’s practical nature with the demands of the modern family car owner.

Dynamic Exterior

The all-new Octavia is larger than its predecessors. The liftback variant has an additional 19 mm than what it’s used to, and the Wagon is stretched 22 mm longer. Both options are also now 15 mm wider than the third-gen models while its wheelbase remains the same at 2686 mm.

The previous generation’s unimpressive design was revamped and given a facelift to make it look more elegant. The renowned Skoda grille and vertical slats were paired with more modern LED double signature front lights. Meanwhile, the rear gets a c-shaped LED tail lights which have always been part of Skoda’s traditional design.

There are also a few features which initially are only available on VRS variants that are now standard even to the base level units including the 19-inch alloy wheels.

To compliment such changes, the design team also worked on the facade of the Octavia to give it a more sculptural and three-dimensional layout. The shoulder lines also now stretch the body to provide it with a more modern and dynamic feel.

Modern Interior

Because of the overall increase in its dimensions, Octavia’s interior  also benefited from these changes. The rear knee room, for example, is now 78 mm longer than what it’s used to. The Wagon variant now has 30 Liter more interior volume while the Liftback gets a 10 Liter volume upgrade.

The cabin also now comes with an 8.25-inch (10-inch for top-of-the-line variants) touchscreen infotainment system. Below the control display sits numerous functional buttons and the AC.

Furthermore, the Octavia now features a two-spoke steering wheel which goes along with an automatic transmission with a shift-by-wire system mechanism. This family car also has a dinky rocker shift instead of the traditional stick shift.

With the announcement of the release of the 2020 Skoda Octavia, Perth car lovers should prepare their wallets. With all the updates that Skoda has done, you could expect its price to go higher than the previous generation.

Industry experts expect it to have a starting price of £19,000 (AUS$36,343) for the 1.0 Liter petrol variant and £24,000 (AUS$46,000) for the 1.5 TSI 150 SE L unit.
